Dr. Carmen Faso

Biography

Carmen Faso leads the mechanisms of unconventional protein secretion group at the Institute of Cell Biology, University of Bern. Her research focuses on the mechanisms of unconventional protein secretion and the development of translational approaches in the context of parasite-host interactions. Using model organisms such as the intestinal parasitic protists Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica, her work aims to advance understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying these processes. She conducts multidisciplinary research that includes experiments utilizing human 'mini-gut' systems to study host-parasite interactions in a physiologically relevant environment, addressing challenges related to traditional co-cultivation techniques. Her contributions to the field enhance the understanding of both health and disease processes linked to protein secretion pathways and their implications for translational applications.
