Biography

Carmen Gillies is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the University of Saskatchewan. She completed her PhD in Educational Foundations in 2018, focusing on critical race theory and critical mixed-race studies to analyze the experiences of Métis teachers within K-12 settings. Gillies possesses a Master of Education, where her research examined the historical and ongoing impacts of scientific racism and anti-Indigenous racism in education across Saskatchewan. Her academic interests include examining the potential of critical race theory to inform racially just education, particularly in fostering anti-racist practices among teacher candidates. With extensive involvement in teacher education, she facilitates professional development sessions for educators and collaborates with local schools to promote anti-racism education. Gillies has served as a Research Associate at the Aboriginal Education Research Centre and has led various research projects aimed at conceptualizing anti-racist responsibilities and the role of critical professional development in teacher education. She is dedicated to mentoring graduate students and continues to engage in presentations that highlight anti-racist practices and policies in education.
