Professor of Catastrophe Risk Engineering at University College London and Research Director, Deputy Departmental Graduate Tutor for Research Students in the Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering. Prior to joining UCL, he worked as a Catastrophe Risk Modeler at AIR Worldwide, now part of Verisk, in San Francisco, and as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of California, Irvine. He earned his PhD in Earthquake Risk from Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in January 2011. His research is focused on developing and applying probabilistic statistical methods and tools for catastrophe risk modelling and disaster risk reduction, examining risks to building portfolios and infrastructure exposed to natural hazards like earthquakes, typhoons, and floods, particularly in community infrastructure such as schools and hospitals in developing countries. He co-leads the DE|RISC Lab, working at the intersection of civil engineering, natural hazard science, and social sciences to facilitate multi-hazard risk resilience-informed decision-making. Galasso has authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles, has been a Project Lead for research funded by multiple UK research councils, and serves as Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction and Associate Editor for the Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering. He is committed to fostering an inclusive research environment and achieving resilient and sustainable built environments.
