Dr. Carol Liao

Biography

Dr. Carol Liao is a prominent faculty member at the Peter Allard School of Law, with expertise in business law, corporate governance, and social enterprise law. She earned her Ph.D. in a Joint Program at the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. Prior to her academic career, Dr. Liao served as a senior associate in the Mergers and Acquisitions Group at Shearman & Sterling LLP in New York and worked as a law clerk at the British Columbia Court of Appeal. Dr. Liao's research interests include sustainable business models, social finance, corporate board diversity, and comparative corporate law, particularly in the context of Canada and the United States. She has published contributions to works like the Cambridge Handbook of Social Enterprise Law and is actively involved in collaborations with scholars from around the world. Engaging with students and fostering a stimulating learning environment are central to her teaching philosophy, as she aspires to inspire her students to become critical thinkers and responsible global citizens.
