Carol Schuurmans is a Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Biochemistry. Her research focuses on neural cell fate specification and its role in tissue morphogenesis during the development of the central nervous system, particularly the retina and neocortex. She has worked to understand the injury response by applying knowledge of neural development to create lineage conversion strategies for cell replacement therapies. Schuurmans completed her BSc and MSc degrees in Microbiology at the University of Alberta and her PhD in Medical Genetics at the University of Toronto. Her postdoctoral studies were conducted at the Institut de Génétique et de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire in Strasbourg, France. She joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor in 2001 and became a full Professor in 2014. In July 2016, she was appointed to the Sunnybrook Research Institute and continued as a full Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. Her research also explores the influence of transcription factors and signaling molecules on retinal and cortical neurogenesis and tissue morphogenesis.
