Dr. Carol Semrad

Biography

Carol Semrad, MD, is a gastroenterologist at the University of Chicago, specializing in small bowel diseases, including celiac disease, diarrhea, and malabsorption syndromes, as well as nutrition education and small bowel endoscopy. She is a leader in the field, utilizing advanced techniques such as video capsule endoscopy and double balloon enteroscopy for managing small bowel bleeding, ulcers, and tumors. Dr. Semrad is an esteemed member of the medical leadership team at the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center and has co-authored chapters in major medical textbooks on the topics of malabsorption and diarrheal diseases. She has directed courses on small bowel endoscopy and developed teaching materials on clinical nutrition and short bowel syndrome for the American Gastroenterological Association. Additionally, she serves as the chairperson of the University of Chicago Medicine's Nutrition Advisory Committee, overseeing hospital nutrition policies.
