Carol Sheppard is an Advanced Research Fellow and Principal Investigator focusing on virology at Imperial College London. She completed her PhD in Molecular Microbiology at Imperial College London in 2012, where she researched bacteriophage-host interactions, particularly the antimicrobial potential of phage-encoded proteins and their inhibition of bacterial RNA polymerase. After her PhD, she joined the laboratory of Professor Finn Werner at University College London, expanding her research to archaeal virology and examining the interactions between hyperthermophilic viruses and their archaeal hosts. In 2018, she transitioned to the Barclay Lab at Imperial College, where she investigated the role of host cell proteins, specifically the ANP32 family, in supporting influenza virus replication. Her work was pivotal in demonstrating how host factors underpin the activity of influenza viral RNA polymerase. Under her leadership, the research in the Sheppard Lab aims to develop a deeper understanding of host-virus interactions at the level of RNA polymerase regulation, with the ultimate goal of informing the development of host-directed antiviral strategies. The lab is planning to recruit postdoctoral research associates in summer 2025.
