Biography

Carol Simpson Stern has devoted her career to improving higher education through her work in the Department of Performance Studies at Northwestern University, where she joined the faculty in 1974 and served as Chairperson from 1984 to 1993. She concluded a five-year term as Dean of the Graduate School. Her research and teaching focus on modern and contemporary American and British writers and performance personae. Additionally, Stern serves as an associate editor for Text Performance Quarterly and as a consultant for the Higher Education Commission. She holds a PhD in English and both an MA and BA in English from Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, respectively. Stern has been recognized with several awards, including the Associated Student Government Faculty Administration Honor Roll in 2014 and the Galbut Outstanding Faculty Award in 2009.
