Dr. Carol Troy

Biography

Carol M. Troy is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at Columbia University. She holds both an MD and a PhD from New York University School of Medicine, which she completed in 1984. Dr. Troy's research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of neuronal degeneration and death, particularly through the regulation of caspase activity. Her work addresses the specific apoptotic and non-apoptotic signaling functions of individual caspase members within the nervous system. With a rich background in pharmacology and medicine, she has conducted significant studies utilizing mouse models to explore the implications of caspase activation in disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Troy's laboratory investigates how aberrant caspase activity can serve as a potential therapeutic target, employing genetic and pharmacologic approaches to dissect these complex pathways further. Her ongoing research includes collaborations with other labs to characterize animal models of neurodegeneration and to investigate behavioral phenotyping in relation to age-related changes in neuronal health.
