Biography

Carola Jäggi is a distinguished scholar in the field of art history, specializing in early Christian and medieval sacred architecture. She completed her studies in Art History, Classical Archaeology, Christian Archaeology, Medieval Archaeology, and Ethnology at the universities of Basel, Zurich, Freiburg, and Bonn from 1982 to 1988. Jäggi has held multiple research positions, including with the Max Planck Society and as an assistant professor at the University of Basel. She also received a habilitation fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation, focusing her research on architecture and liturgy in early women’s monasteries during the 13th and 14th centuries. Since 2013, she has served as the Professor of Medieval Art History and Archaeology at the University of Zurich, where she previously led the Institute of Art History. Her primary research interests include early Christian and medieval sacred architecture, the effects of religious changes on material culture, and the recycling of late antiquity and the Middle Ages.
