Dr. Carolin Hulke

Biography

Carolin Hulke is an economic geographer who joined the Department of Economic Geography as an Assistant Professor in August 2023 after completing her PhD at the University of Cologne in Germany in 2022. Her dissertation focused on local and regional horticulture value chains in Namibia and their interlinkages with the global tourism industry. Her research interests lie at the intersection of globalized economies and local development outcomes, particularly in the Global South. She examines complex interlinkages, regional resilience, livelihood well-being, and inclusive development, with a keen interest in the governance processes that enhance sustainability within value chains. Throughout her career, Carolin has been engaged in large collaborative research centers, such as 'Future Rural Africa,' where she conducted in-depth mixed-methods research in Southern Africa with an international interdisciplinary team. Her conceptual focus includes critical approaches to global value chains, production networks, and regionalization dynamics, addressing how rural regions in the Global South can transform their economies in socially and environmentally sensitive ways.
