Biography

Carolina Herrera is a Senior Research Fellow in the Section of Immunology Infection at Imperial College London. She obtained her BSc in Chemistry and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Barcelona, Spain. Following her doctoral studies, she joined Professor John P. Moore's group at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York, USA, where she worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Her research has primarily focused on the mechanisms of HIV transmission and the associated role of mucosal infections and inflammation. Utilizing ex vivo tissue models, she studies mucosal responses to various viral infections including HIV, HCV, and Zika virus, which are essential for the pre-clinical evaluation of prevention strategies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis and vaccine candidates. Over the last ten years, she has been involved in multiple significant research projects funded by agencies including amfAR, the NIH, and various health research institutes.
