Dr. Carolina Överlien

Biography

Carolina Överlien conducted research and served as a research leader for several years, focusing on topics related to intimate partner violence and domestic violence in relation to children. Her research operates at the intersection of social work, psychology, and sociology, with a particular focus on violence experienced by children and young people. She earned her PhD from the Department of Child Studies at Linköping University in 2004, with her dissertation addressing sexual abuse of girls in youth detention homes. Överlien's work primarily centers on children in women's shelters and crisis centers, youth intimate partner violence, and sexual violence. She has worked for years at the Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies in Oslo, leading research concerning children and young people. In 2019, she became a Professor of Social Work at Stockholm University, and in February 2024, she accepted a position as a professor at the National Centre for Knowledge on Men's Violence Against Women at Uppsala University. Her research includes ongoing projects related to domestic violence shelters as part of the Global Domestic Violence Shelter Study.
