Biography

Carolina S. Sarmiento is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her work addresses urban development and governance, focusing on creating and destroying cultural spaces in working-class communities of color. Her research and practice emphasize grassroots learning to respond to forms of inequality and injustice, aiming to build transformative creative alternatives. Sarmiento critically examines urban development in low-income communities of color, centering everyday responses in community-based planning and exploring transnational development to create new democratic processes. Currently, Sarmiento is engaged in a participatory action research project with VOCES de la Frontera, addressing significant threats to the health and safety of Wisconsin’s essential workers. Her teaching and research interface significantly with public investment and community advocacy, as demonstrated by collaborations with organizations like Freedom Inc and the creation of resources like the Dining Guide for Worker Justice in Wisconsin.
