Biography

Caroline Arbour joined the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Montreal in 2016 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the Sleep Medicine Research Centre at Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal. During this time, she spent six months with the Coma Science Group in Belgium, a world-renowned organization studying consciousness and sensory acuity following brain injury or imminent death situations. Early in her career, Arbour focused her programming on sleep difficulties and pain management among individuals who have suffered traumatic brain injuries and those living with cancer, two clinically significant populations known to be severely affected by these persistent and debilitating conditions. As a young researcher, she has made a significant impact on healthcare locally and internationally. Her applied research on sleep aims to optimize health outcomes during and after acute care episodes, particularly in pain management, regaining autonomy, and enhancing quality of life. Her notable contributions have garnered media attention, shedding light on various issues within our healthcare system such as non-restorative sleep in hospital settings, pain assessment in non-communicative patients, and inadequate support services for managing complex symptoms at home. Globally, Arbour is one of the few scientists from the nursing discipline dedicated to the study of sleep, contributing to a new body of knowledge with tangible and lasting benefits for the health and well-being of populations.
