Biography

Carolyn Abbot is a Professor of Environmental Law at the University of Manchester and Head of the Department of Law. She holds both an LLB and a PhD from the University of Manchester. Previously, she was a Lecturer in Law at the Lancashire Law School, University of Central Lancashire in Preston. Abbot is an active member of the Society of Legal Scholars and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Environmental Law. Her research interests are centered on environmental regulation, the role of environmental NGOs, and public participation in legal expertise and regulatory enforcement practices. Current projects include research on how environmental groups utilize legal expertise and influence the post-Brexit environmental law landscape. She is also preparing a chapter on transnational environmental crimes, exploring alternative approaches to complex regulatory issues. Abbot’s work has notably influenced policy discussions at both UK and EU levels, particularly regarding regulatory compliance and enforcement. She teaches environmental law at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and is open to supervising MPhil and PhD students in the field of environmental law.
