Dr. Carolyn Hansson

Biography

Carolyn Hansson is a Professor Emerita in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo. She holds a cross-appointment in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Professor Hansson is an Associate Editor for Cement Concrete Research and has been recognized as a Fellow by several prestigious organizations including the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Canada, and the American Concrete Institute. She was a member of the Executive Committee Board of Governors for Acta Materialia and served as the Executive Secretary in 2014. Her research focuses on durability in construction materials, particularly corrosion and electrochemical techniques related to reinforced concrete. She studies the corrosion of steel in concrete and employs various techniques to measure corrosion levels, including electrical meters and acoustic monitors. Her work is critical for maintaining the integrity of infrastructure and she is also involved in researching rust-resistant reinforcing materials such as stainless steel.
