Dr. Carolyn Mcallaster

Biography

Carolyn McAllaster is a Clinical Professor Emerita at Duke University School of Law, where she has made significant contributions to the field of law through her work as the founder of the Health Justice Clinic and the former AIDS/HIV Cancer Legal Project. She directs the HIV/AIDS Policy Clinic, emphasizing clinical education and public interest law. McAllaster has a rich background in litigation, having begun her legal practice in a Durham litigation firm before establishing her own practice that handled complex litigation in both state and federal courts. Throughout her career, she served as an administrative hearing officer for the North Carolina Department of Human Resources and as a court arbitrator, reinforcing her commitment to public service. Since joining Duke Law School faculty in 1988, she has taught various courses, including pretrial trial practice and child advocacy, and has contributed to the National Institute of Trial Advocacy as an adjunct member. McAllaster has authored multiple books and articles, including works on HIV legal issues and North Carolina litigation practices, and is a recognized speaker on related topics.
