Dr. Carolyn Oldham

Biography

Carolyn Oldham is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Western Australia, where she has made significant contributions to the fields of Civil, Environmental, and Mining Engineering. She earned her Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemistry and a PhD in Environmental Engineering. Her research is highly interdisciplinary, focusing on transport processes, environmental chemistry, and spatial-temporal patchiness in aquatic systems. Over her distinguished career, Carolyn has led numerous research projects addressing issues such as arsenic contamination, nitrogen plumes in groundwater, and the interactions between surface and groundwater quality. She has been an active mentor for junior female academics in engineering and has chaired several committees aimed at promoting gender equity in academia. Carolyn was the recipient of a national award from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council, recognizing her commitment to enhancing diversity in student learning experiences. She has also been involved in various international collaborations, including projects aimed at building engineering capacity in developing countries. As a dedicated educator, Carolyn has supervised over 100 Engineering Honours students and numerous PhD candidates. Currently, she is engaged in various research projects that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on biogeochemistry, nutrient cycling, and environmental sustainability.
