Biography

Originally from the United States, Carolyn Stevens moved to Australia in 1994 after living in Japan for four years. She holds an AB magna cum laude from Harvard College in social anthropology and a PhD in cultural anthropology from Columbia University. After completing her postgraduate studies, she received a Japan Foundation Fellowship to study at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Studies in Yokohama, Japan. Following her arrival in Australia, Professor Stevens taught and conducted research at Jochi (Sophia) and Obirin Universities in Tokyo, as well as holding visiting research and teaching positions at the University of Tokyo and Meiji Gakuin University. She was appointed Professor of Japanese Studies and Director of the Japanese Studies Centre at the University of Melbourne in 2012, where she served for eighteen years. Her expertise aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals established in 2015, concentrating on themes such as anthropology, cultural studies, Japanese studies, disability studies, and popular music. Steven's recent projects include leading an international symposium on Gender and Media in Japan's Imperial Succession and collaborating on various research initiatives related to race and diversity in Japanese studies.
