Biography

Carrie Shemanko established her own laboratory at the University of Calgary in 2002, focusing on the molecular controls involved in normal mammary gland development and the contributing factors to breast cancer metastasis. She earned her B.S. in Genetic Biology from the University of Alberta in 1988, her M.Sc. in Biochemistry from the same institution in 1993, and her Ph.D. in Genetic Biology from the University of Dundee in 1997. Her training included post-doctoral research in Freiburg and Frankfurt, Germany. Dr. Shemanko's research integrates developmental and cancer biology, utilizing a variety of novel techniques to address key questions in breast cancer mechanisms. She is a founding member of the Breast Cancer Bone Metastasis Research Program at the University of Calgary and has collaborated on multiple projects across Canada, the USA, France, and China, publishing significant findings in journals such as the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and Molecular Endocrinology.
