Biography

Carsten Gundlach completed a five-year undergraduate physics course at the University of Hamburg and later transferred to the University of Cambridge for Mathematics Part III. He received his PhD from Cambridge in 1992. Gundlach has held postdoctoral positions at several prestigious institutions including the University of Utah, LAEFF in Madrid, the Albert Einstein Institute in Potsdam, and the University of Chicago. He joined the University of Southampton in 1999 as a Lecturer, climbing the ranks to Reader in 2005 and Professor in 2009. His research focuses on employing numerical relativity methods to address mathematical questions concerning general relativity, particularly in the formation of naked singularities from regular initial data as well as critical phenomena in vacuum gravitational collapse. Gundlach has been actively involved in teaching various mathematics modules, currently teaching advanced courses including Advanced Partial Differential Equations and Integral Transform Methods. He also supervises undergraduate projects and serves on the council of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, with roles extending to external examinations at the University of Loughborough.
