Biography

Casandra L. Thomson is a Clinical Professor of Law and the Director of the Negotiation & Dispute Resolution Education at Duke University School of Law. She teaches upper-level courses in Negotiation, Mediation Advocacy, and Alternative Dispute Resolution, as well as first-year Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing. Thomson is a faculty member at the Duke-Leiden Institute for Global Transnational Law and has received the law school's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2018. In addition to her teaching role, she conducts negotiation workshops at Duke Medical School and for international law firms. A visiting scholar and lecturer in Alternative Dispute Resolution at Mackenzie University in São Paulo, Brazil, Thomson is a certified mediator with the International Mediation Institute and holds certifications for mediating in North Carolina and New York. She actively mediates a variety of matters and has served as Co-Chair of the American Bar Association's Legal Education Dispute Resolution Committee from 2022 to 2024. Prior to joining the faculty at Duke Law in 2015, she worked as an attorney at Latham & Watkins LLP, focusing on complex commercial litigation, and clerked for the Honorable John F. Walter in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Thomson holds a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School and a B.A. with distinction in Political Science from the University of Michigan.
