Biography

Professor Cassidy Johnson is affiliated with the Bartlett Development Planning Unit at University College London, where she conducts research and teaches on disaster risk, post-disaster recovery, and climate change adaptation. Originally from Canada, she joined UCL in 2006. Her academic interests focus on improving the quality of life and livelihoods of low-income groups living in urban areas. Professor Johnson's work contributes to the field of disaster risk reduction, particularly the role of local governments and civil society in integrating an understanding of disaster risk with development. She has worked on issues related to urban planning, housing quality, building code regulations, informal settlements, and the impacts of forced evictions. She has engaged internationally with policymakers and local communities in over eight countries, including Turkey, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi. Her PhD research was centered on post-disaster temporary housing, particularly following the 1999 Earthquakes in Turkey. Professor Johnson has also been involved in projects with Natural Resources Canada focusing on solar energy in cities and has contributed to field investigations in response to the recent Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Turkey. She has published extensively in leading journals related to urban development and disaster housing and has edited four books.
