Biography

Catalina bridges design and health equity, centering community-based processes, knowledge production, and a justice-oriented study of emerging technologies. She directs the Critical Anatomies Lab, focusing on collaborative design approaches that benefit communities. Her educational background spans Design, Feminist Science Technology Studies, and Somatics. Catalina's dedication to community-engaged work began early in her career as a designer, notably through her award-winning undergraduate capstone project that integrated participatory design with microeconomics. She has gained experience in design studios, start-up incubators, and research hubs, including her faculty role at Srishti Manipal Institute of Art Design and Technology in Bangalore, India. Additionally, she contributed to Participatory Design and Community Healthcare projects within rural communities and collaborated with Digital Rights and Community Health organizations. While at UT Austin, she taught courses incorporating critical theory in design and offered a special topics course on Design and Policing. During her time in India, Catalina built networks of research and activism in Southeast Asia, participated in training on technology-facilitated gender-based violence, and evaluated research funding allocations for gender and digital technology projects. She serves as a subject matter expert for graphic design in projects with the Association for Progressive Communications and the International Development Research Centre, Canada.
