Dr. Catherine Gascoigne

Biography

Catherine Gascoigne is a Macquarie Research Fellow at the Macquarie Law School, focusing on Environmental Law. Her research primarily concerns International Economic Law, with particular focuses on International Trade Law, International Investment Law, International Environmental Law, and International Energy Law. She is currently involved in a research project titled 'Towards a New Legal Framework for Adjudicating Causal Questions in International Investment Law', which analyzes how arbitral tribunals determine causal questions and proposes a new approach. Catherine is the author of a monograph titled 'Causation Law and the World Trade Organization: An Econometric Approach' published by Cambridge University Press in 2023, which received an Honourable Mention from the Australian New Zealand Society of International Law for the Book Prize in 2024. She has published several journal articles in top-tier journals in her field, including an award-winning article on the determination of causation in trade remedy applications. She holds multiple degrees including a Doctor of Philosophy in Law from the University of Cambridge, a Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Oxford, and both a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Sydney. Catherine is an active member of several professional organizations and has served as an editor and council member while studying at Cambridge. She worked as a lawyer in New South Wales and has experience teaching law at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
