Dr. Catherine Harding

Biography

Catherine Harding is an Associate Professor and Acting Associate Dean in the Department of Art History and Visual Studies at the University of Victoria. She specializes in Late Medieval and Early Renaissance art with a focus on Gothic art, architecture, and cosmographical drawings in fourteenth-century Italy, particularly in Orvieto. Catherine has contributed to numerous academic programs and initiatives, including a Visiting Assistant Professorship at Queen’s University where she taught Medieval and Renaissance art. She has been actively engaged in interdisciplinary collaborations within the Medieval Studies program at UVic, publishing works on mosaic production related to the Opera del Duomo in Orvieto and exploring themes of material culture, belief, and doubt in late medieval Italy. Her publications include studies on the text-image relations in the works of Brunetto Latini and contributions to well-known journals. Catherine’s ongoing research involves the examination of illustrated encyclopedic texts from late medieval Italy and their role in shaping cultural knowledge and societal structures. Additionally, she has held several prestigious editorial positions and has been involved in grant facilitation within her faculty. Her impact on the field is underscored by her active participation in scholarly discourse and her dedication to teaching.
