Biography

Catherine Hecht is a political scientist specializing in international organizations, democratic governance, and sustainable development. Her research focuses on the evolution of international norms and discourses, multilateral diplomacy, and the workings of the United Nations (UN) system and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Hecht serves as a sessional lecturer and honorary research associate at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at the University of British Columbia. Previously, she was a senior research fellow at the Centre for Global Cooperation Research in Germany. Hecht also held a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) post-doctoral fellowship in Austria and taught at the Vienna School of International Studies/Diplomatic Academy and Technische Universität Darmstadt. Her professional experience includes consulting for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and working with civil society organizations in Central Europe, as well as observing elections for the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of British Columbia and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
