Biography

Catherine Laing is a Professor and Dean at the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary. A third-generation Calgarian and a four-time alumna of the institution, she has established herself in the field of pediatric oncology and nursing education since obtaining her RN in 1998. Laing's academic journey began with a clinical background in pediatric oncology and transitioned into academia in 2013. She has focused her research on the psychosocial effects of childhood cancer, shifting her attention toward lottery-based admissions for undergraduate nursing students since becoming associate dean of undergraduate programs in 2018. Presently, Laing leads the Faculty of Nursing and contributes actively to nursing research and education on local, provincial, national, and international levels. Her research interests include mental health, patient-family centered care, and innovative approaches to delivering psychosocial healthcare to children with cancer. Laing’s workflow integrates technology into nursing education and includes past projects such as exploring the therapeutic value of digital storytelling for pediatric oncology patients. She engages in numerous strategic initiatives at the university aimed at enhancing nursing programs and outcomes for students and patients alike.
