Biography

Professor Murphy received two Bachelor of Science degrees, in Chemistry and Biochemistry, from the University of Illinois in 1986, and completed her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin in 1990. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology from 1990 to 1993. From 1993 to 2009, she served as a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of South Carolina. In August 2009, she joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois. Her research focuses on the synthesis and properties of inorganic nanomaterials, particularly for biological and energy-related applications. Her group investigates the chemical interactions of nanomaterials with their surroundings and explores diverse research projects, including the fabrication and functionalization of inorganic nanoparticles, cellular imaging, and chemical sensing.
