Dr. Catherine Schenk

Biography

Catherine R. Schenk is a Professor of Economic and Social History at the University of Oxford, with a distinguished career that includes previous positions at Victoria University of Wellington, Royal Holloway, University of London, and the University of Glasgow. She has also held visiting professorships at Nankai University in China and Hong Kong University. Throughout her academic journey, she has engaged extensively with international economic policies, having served as a visiting researcher at the International Monetary Fund and the Bank for International Settlements. Professor Schenk's work focuses on the historical transitions of international currencies and the reform of the international monetary system, illustrating the interplay between national economies and global finance. Currently, she is the lead on an ERC-funded project named GloCoBank, examining the development of global correspondent banking from 1870 to 2000. Her notable publications include "International Economic Relations 1945" and "Decline of Sterling; managing retreat international currency 1945-1992." May 2021 saw the release of the second edition of her significant work, offering insights into the globalization of the economy, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on international relations, finance, and trade.
