Biography

Catherine Seavitt is the Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, University of Pennsylvania, and serves as the Martin Margy Meyerson Professor of Urbanism. She is also the Faculty Co-Director of the Ian L. McHarg Center for Urbanism and Ecology and the Creative Director of the LA+ Journal. Her work involves examining the intersections of public space, public health, and ecology, promoting innovative plant knowledge and actionable responses to the climate crisis. A registered architect and landscape architect, she combines multi-species perspectives with ecological knowledge to support social and environmental justice. Seavitt has held esteemed fellowships including with the American Academy in Rome, the American Society of Landscape Architects, and the American Institute of Architects. Additionally, she has received Fulbright Fellowship and Graham Foundation grants for her research in Brazil. Her previous roles include serving as a Professor and Director of the Master of Landscape Architecture Program at the City College of New York. Seavitt has authored several influential books and numerous chapters and essays published in reputable journals such as Architectural Review and Harvard Design Magazine.
