Biography

Catherine Sirois is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research lies at the intersection of scholarship on poverty, punishment, and governance in America. She employs a range of qualitative and quantitative methods to study how the state governs marginalized groups, particularly low-income Black and Brown communities. Sirois's current book project, titled "Interlocking Institutions: Welfare, Punishment, Governance Crossover Youth," examines the management of children at the junction of child welfare and juvenile justice, illuminating interlocking processes that produce and constrain coercive control. Her prior work has been published in leading journals such as the American Sociological Review and Social Science & Medicine. Sirois received her PhD in Sociology from Stanford University in 2023 and subsequently became a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Watson Institute for International Affairs at Brown University from 2023 to 2025.
