Dr. Catherine Staton

Biography

Catherine Ann Staton is a Professor of Emergency Medicine, Population Health Sciences, and Neurosurgery at Duke University. She holds an MD and MSc, and is also the Vice Chair for Research Strategy & Faculty Development. Her research focuses on innovative implementation methods within health systems globally to enhance access to acute care. Staton's notable projects include leading an injury registry at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Tanzania, where she identified significant alcohol use risks among injury patients and adapted a brief intervention that proved effective in reducing binge drinking. She mentors numerous students and early-career researchers in health systems interventions across a spectrum of socioeconomic contexts. With a robust background in emergency medicine, Dr. Staton has contributed to numerous manuscripts and research initiatives aimed at improving health care quality. Her work also extends to addressing the impacts of climate change on health systems, particularly in the Carolinas, and she actively collaborates with international faculty to advance research in low- and middle-income countries.
