Dr. Catherine Theis

Biography

Catherine Theis is an author and educator involved in various aspects of literature and creative writing. Her notable publications include MEDEA (Plays Inverse, 2017) and Fraud Good Sleep (Salt Modern Poets, 2011). She is currently translating works by Italian poet Jolanda Insana, with a publication entitled Slashing Sounds set to be released by University of Chicago Press in October 2024. Theis’s scholarly work merges theories of phenomenology and performance studies, particularly focusing on twentieth-century poetry and prose. Additionally, her creative work investigates the intersection of lyrical and dramatic traditions. Theis's teaching approach bridges her scholarly and creative endeavors, enhancing the educational experience for her students, particularly in general education writing and creative writing workshops. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Southern California, earned in August 2020, along with multiple Master of Fine Arts degrees.
