Biography

Cecile L. Phan is a Neuromuscular Specialist and Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta. She provides expert care to patients with complex acquired and hereditary neuromuscular diseases and has played a key role in developing essential clinical programs, including the muscle nerve biopsy clinic at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic and the joint Neuromuscular Genetics Clinic. Dr. Phan co-directs a multidisciplinary clinic that serves nearly 400 patients with hereditary neuromuscular disorders. She is deeply committed to medical education, serving as the Fellowship Program Director for the Neuromuscular Fellowship Program, which attracts trainees both nationally and internationally. Dr. Phan has received numerous awards for her outstanding teaching and mentorship and for her dedication to resident wellness. In addition to her clinical teaching roles, she provides leadership for the Department of Medicine as Director of Fellowships and actively contributes to national initiatives through her involvement with various organizations such as the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiologists (CSCN) and the Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation (CNSF). Her academic work is focused on improving diagnostic care and access to therapies for patients with rare neuromuscular disorders, and she is currently a Principal Investigator in clinical trials related to FSHD and serves as a co-Principal Investigator on trials for ALS, CIDP, and myotonic dystrophy type 1.
