Biography

Cecilia Morgan is a social and cultural historian with a research focus on gender, colonialism, and imperialism related to the British Empire. She specializes in writing Canadian history at a popular level, particularly concerning 19th- and 20th-century Ontario. Her current projects explore the intersections of gender, culture, and imperial identities, highlighting their roles in Canadian history. Dr. Morgan has published a book on the history of commemoration and memory in Canada and is in the process of completing a manuscript focused on the history of settler societies within the British Empire from 1783 to 1920. Additionally, she is researching the experiences of 19th-century Indigenous mixed-race individuals, including performers, lecturers, missionaries, political petitioners, and students across British North America, Canada, Britain, Europe, the United States, and Australia. This project examines themes of gender, theater performance, and colonial relationships during the 19th-century transatlantic world. Dr. Morgan has received SSHRC funding for her project on English-Canadian actresses on transnational imperial stages from the 1860s to the 1940s and has presented numerous papers at conferences while publishing various articles related to her research.
