Biography

Celeste Curington is an intersectional scholar with diverse research interests focused on the African Diaspora in the United States and Europe. Her research examines the mechanisms of intersectional oppression and the inequalities of race, gender, and class citizenship that are perpetuated and experienced in various settings, including workplaces, neighborhoods, public spaces, and the dating market. Curington's forthcoming book, 'Laboring Shadow Empire: Race, Gender Care Work in Portugal', explores the everyday lives of the African descendant care service workforce against the backdrop of a purportedly 'anti-racial' Europe influenced by the Portuguese colonial empire. Through years of ethnographic research in the greater metropolitan area of Lisbon, she chronicles the experiences of African descendant care workers as they navigate systemic gendered anti-Black racism. Curington has co-authored the book 'Dating Divide: Race Desire Era Online Romance', offering a comprehensive analysis of 'digital-sexual racism' in online dating contexts. Her work has been published in prominent venues including the Du Bois Review and the American Sociological Review. Currently, she is embarking on a new project focusing on BIPOC care and birth workers’ experiences amidst reproductive injustices in Massachusetts and nationally, while her work has also been featured in various media outlets such as Variety Magazine and the Daily Show.
