Dr. Célia Fonseca Guerra

Biography

Célia Fonseca Guerra is a Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with a focus on understanding weak chemical interactions and self-assembly in biological supramolecular systems. Her research employs Kohn-Sham molecular orbital theory to analyze cooperativity, π-assistance substituent effects, and Watson-Crick base pairs, leading to groundbreaking insights into hydrogen bonding and supramolecular aggregation. Fonseca Guerra also investigates the role of metal ions in self-assembly processes and develops analytical methods to study chemical bonding, contributing significantly to the chemical sciences domain. Over her career, she has held various prestigious positions, including extraordinary professorship at Leiden University and visiting professorships abroad. She has received numerous awards, such as the NWO Westerdijk Talent Scheme and has been recognized as a Chemistry Europe Fellow.
