Professor Cem Tasan is a POSCO Associate Professor of Metallurgy in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. He earned his BS and MS degrees in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, Turkey. Following his education, he conducted his PhD research in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. Tasan then moved to Germany to work at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung, where he served as a postdoc and group leader. He joined the MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 2016 and was granted tenure in 2022. His research focuses on the boundaries of physical metallurgy and solid mechanics, particularly in designing new alloys with exceptional damage resistance and developing new in-situ characterization tools and methods. Tasan's work aims to enhance the understanding of transformation, deformation, and damage micro-mechanisms in metallic materials while designing microstructures that enhance damage resistance.
