Biography

Chad Córdova is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Romance Studies at Cornell University, specializing in French thought and literature. He received his BA in French and Art History from New York University and a PhD in French from Princeton University. Prior to joining Cornell, he served as an Assistant Professor of French at Emory University from 2018 to 2024. Córdova's research focuses on the complex interrelations between premodern and contemporary currents of continental thought, particularly in the realms of aesthetics, ecological philosophy, ethics, and psychopathology. His forthcoming monograph, 'Toward Premodern Posthumanism: Anarchic Ontologies of Earthly Life in Early Modern France,' published by Northwestern University Press, explores how ancient and early modern ideas intersect with contemporary ecological crises. Córdova is also working on an experimental study of Montaigne's Essays in the context of recent theoretical trends, aiming to highlight resonances and dissonances between Montaigne’s work and modern discourse in posthumanist ethics, political theory, and ecological thought. His primary research interests include studies of depressive theories, ecological thought, posthumanism, and the intersection of philosophy and literature from 1500 to 1800.
