Biography

Chai Ng is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer in the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of New South Wales, with a focus on improving cardiac genetic research and pioneering work in precision medicine specific to cardiac channelopathies. His research has led to the development of validated assays for ion channel variants, establishing new standards in the field. These assays provide reliable data to reclassify Variants of Uncertain Significance (VUS), which is crucial for accurate diagnoses and clinical decision-making. His work addresses significant challenges in managing conditions such as long QT syndrome by distinguishing between pathogenic and benign variants. By improving functional data accuracy, Dr. Ng enhances diagnostic precision and guides interventions like implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, supporting targeted pharmacotherapy based on specific genetic defects. He collaborates globally to reclassify VUS in hundreds of patients, positively impacting outcomes and shifting the paradigm towards precision medicine, offering families clarity and enabling cascade testing to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death.
