Biography

Chaitanya Sambrani is an art historian and curator specializing in modern and contemporary art from Asia, focusing particularly on tradition, marginality, and politics. He teaches courses on modernism and contemporary art in India, Indonesia, China, and Japan, as well as curatorial practice. His significant curatorial projects include "Edge Desire: Recent Art in India," which was exhibited in museums across Australia, the USA, Mexico, and India from 2004 to 2007, and "Place.Time.Play: Contemporary Art in the West Heavens of the Middle Kingdom," an exchange project between artists from China and India. Sambrani is the principal author of the book "Home World: Art and Life of Gulammohammed Sheikh" and is currently working on a monograph about Tushar Joag addressing water rights in future relations between India and China. He leads an interdisciplinary digital project titled "Wonders of Basham Saw," collaborating with colleagues from ANU, the National Gallery of Australia, the National University of Singapore, and the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford. As the Convenor of Higher Degrees Research, he oversees the MPhil and PhD programs at the School of Art and Design.
