Biography

Professor Balaratnasingam is a consultant ophthalmologist specializing in medical and surgical diseases of the retina. He earned his medical degree with Honours and his PhD with Distinction from the University of Western Australia. His specialized training in ophthalmology took place in Western Australia, followed by three years of post-fellowship training in retina diseases across North America, including the University of British Columbia and several acclaimed centers in the USA. With over 20 years of research experience in ophthalmology, he has published more than 130 scientific manuscripts and 10 book chapters focusing primarily on retinal vascular diseases, particularly diabetic retinopathy. He is actively involved in clinical research, serving as principal investigator in multiple pharmaceutical-sponsored clinical trials as well as investigator-initiated studies aimed at evaluating new treatments for macular degeneration and diabetes-related retinal diseases. Additionally, he is a member of prestigious societies, including the Macula Society and Retina Society, and has taught clinical ophthalmology at undergraduate and fellowship levels. His role as Director of Training for the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists involves overseeing the selection and examination of registrars in the specialty training program in ophthalmology at the University of Western Australia.
