Biography

Chang Li earned a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015. His PhD projects investigated viral entry mechanisms and established gene therapy approaches for HIV-1 infection. Following his doctoral work, Dr. Li completed postdoctoral training at the University of Maryland from 2015 to 2016, and at the University of Washington from 2016 to 2019. His research focuses on in vivo hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) gene therapy for genetic disorders and infectious diseases. Dr. Li began his current position as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Medical Genetics at the University of Washington in early 2020. His work includes novel approaches to HSC gene therapy for beta-hemoglobinopathies and cancer prophylaxis, using techniques such as genome editing and gene integration into safe genomic loci. He has participated in significant projects with potential clinical translation and is also interested in developing innovative strategies for HIV-1 infection via in vivo transduction of HSCs.
