Dr. Chang Sun

Biography

Chang Sun, Assistant Professor in Data Science at Maastricht University, specializes in utilizing data science technologies such as deep learning models and federated machine learning to tackle challenges in health domains, including diabetes, rare diseases like leukemia, cardiovascular diseases, and sleep disorders. He is dedicated to collaborating with researchers from diverse backgrounds and has led multiple national and international initiatives including NWO-VWData, ODISSEI, and DiTECT. Chang is a member of the EU COST Action Distributed Knowledge Graph Group, where he organizes workshops and hackathons. He emphasizes the importance of balancing responsible data practices with social scientific value in research while effectively communicating scientific findings to both the academic community and the general public. He is passionate about supporting women and junior researchers in the data science field and has organized events such as Women Data Science (WIDS) Maastricht. Chang holds a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Shanghai Maritime University and a Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence from the Department of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering at Maastricht University, where he also completed an internship focused on classifying Twitter accounts. Additionally, he leads the Data Scientist MINDSETS Podcast, aimed at promoting diversity and inclusivity in data science.
