Chang Tan specializes in Chinese, East Asian, and Asian diasporic art from the 20th to 21st century. His research interests include global avant-gardism, public and socially engaged art, eco art activism, and vernacular artmaking, as well as the history of collecting and exhibiting Asian art. His monograph, 'Minjian Avant-garde: Art Crowd Contemporary China' (Cornell, 2023), studies how experimental artists mixed and transformed the minjian, a volatile and diverse public in the post-Mao era, and critically assesses the rise of populism in art and politics. Chang has published in peer-reviewed journals including 'Positions: Asia Critique', 'Art Journal', and 'Diacritics'. His curatorial and editorial activities explore connections between Asian and Asian American art within the concept of Global Asias. His current book project, 'Network Moderns', examines the intersection of photography, painting, design, and theater within China and the Chinese diaspora from the 19th century to the present, emphasizing collaborative and vernacular aspects of modernism. Chang is involved in a collaborative project focused on Sinophone eco art. His teaching includes graduate and freshman seminars in Art History and Asian Studies.
