Biography

Channa Jayasena is an internationally recognized specialist in the field of reproductive endocrinology. He currently leads a research team at Imperial College London and works as a Consultant in Reproductive Endocrinology and Head of Andrology at St. Mary's and Hammersmith Hospitals in London. Jayasena qualified in medicine from Cambridge University and undertook specialist training in Diabetes and Endocrinology in London. He has been awarded the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship and the NIHR Clinical Lectureship, during which he conducted first-to-human studies at Imperial College investigating the clinical effects of novel hypothalamic neuropeptides on the kisspeptin human reproductive axis in both men and women. He was also awarded a prestigious NIHR Post-Doctoral Fellowship to investigate the metabolic regulation of male infertility. Professor Jayasena co-chaired the 2021 Society for Endocrinology Guidelines on Testosterone Treatment in men, leading a comprehensive study across 17 countries on the risks of cardiovascular events associated with testosterone treatment in men with low testosterone levels. His research team is focused on fertility treatment for men with azoospermia and has developed cutting-edge techniques in seminal reactive oxygen species measurement and microsurgical testicular sperm extraction (mTESE). Additionally, his work has advanced the understanding of the role of hormone stimulation in mTESE surgical sperm retrieval for men with azoospermia.
