Biography

Chantell Skye Evans is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and the Department of Neurobiology at Duke University. Her research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms of mitochondrial quality control pathways, including mitochondrial fusion and fission events, mitochondrial-derived vesicles, and mitophagy. Aim of her work is to understand how these pathways regulate the mitochondrial network in healthy neurons and how they malfunction in neurodegenerative diseases. She integrates advanced live-cell microscopy to visualize mitochondrial dynamics, along with biochemical techniques and proteomics to define the mechanisms in primary neurons, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and mouse models of disease. Evans holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and has several ongoing grants aimed at understanding neuronal mitochondrial dynamics and their implications in synaptic formation and neurodegeneration.
