Biography

Charalambos Demetriou (PhD 2005, Columbia University) is a political historical sociologist with primary expertise in Ireland and Cyprus. He arrived at Lund University after holding appointments in Russia, the UK (Northern Ireland), Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Israel/Palestine, and Italy, along with four postdoctoral fellowships. His main research areas include the study of social movements, political violence, radicalization, social boundaries, and public identity transformations. Current research is focused on the legitimization of political violence in Ireland during the early 20th century and Cyprus in the mid-20th century. He is also interested in the epistemology of sociological theory, particularly in relation to processes and mechanisms. His teaching includes general instruction methods and theory, emphasizing the connections between academic research and societal issues, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
